Mangalore is situated on the west coast of India, sandwiched between the Arabian Sea to its west and the Western Ghats to its east. It has an average elevation of 72 feet. Mangalore city spans across an area of 184.45 sq. km. The coastal area spans up to 30 km inside the city, after which it changes to undulating hilly terrain sharply towards the east in the Western Ghats. The coastline of the city is dotted with several beaches, such as Mukka, Panambur, Tannirbave, Suratkal, and Someshwar. Coconut trees, palm trees and Asoka trees are considered as the primary vegetation of the city.
