Local inhabitants of Mangalore generally come from various ethnic groups, that hail from the area comprising Tulu Nadu, South Canara and Coastal Karnataka. As per the 2011 census, the total population of Mangalore is 623,841, of which Hindus constitute 68.99%, Muslims 17.40%, Christian 13.15% and other religion (Sikh, Buddhist etc.) 0.46%. Despite so many differences in religion, caste, ethnicity, the people here are very progressive, peacefully coexisting with each other since time immemorial. The literacy rate is 94.03% which is one among the highest in India.
