A majority of the people of Nainital are Kumaoni people. There are also people from all over the country who have settled in the city. As per 2011 census, the population of Nainital was 41,377 individuals. The people of the city are generally very god-fearing and superstitious. They have an elaborate greeting ritual, especially when greeting elders in the community. The people prefer to dress in traditional attire, especially the ones living on the outskirts of the city, among the hills. The women wear ‘lehenga’ and ‘pichora’ or saree. The men wear long sleeved ‘kurta’ and caps. The married women also apply ‘sindoor’ on their foreheads and will also wear a mangalsutra and nose ring. \nThe community is very religious and the people take part in many communal prayers and other rituals. They are great believers in dressing in auspicious colours and believe that Thursdays are not good days. Majority of the people are Hindus and the social life revolves religious activities. The tourism industry forms the backbone of the economy of Nainital.
