Panchkula is located in the state of Haryana and lies close to the Union Territory of Chandigarh. The district of Panchkula constitutes of five distinct towns- Panchkula, Kalka, Pinjore, Raipur Rani and Barwala. Chandimandir Cantonment, headquarters of the western command of the Indian Army, is also located in the district. The city is situated at a height of 365 m (1,198 ft) above sea level and spans across an area of 816 km2 (315 sq. mi). Morni Hills is the highest point of the district. The only perennial river in the area is Ghaggar. Underground water in the district is used for irrigation and drinking. As the district lies in the fault zones of the Himalayas, moderate and high intensity earthquakes have occurred in the past. It is located at a distance of 12 km from the state capital of Chandigarh and 258 km from the national capital of Delhi.
