Patna lies on the southern bank of the river Ganges. The city stretches 35 kilometres in length and 16 to 18 kilometres in width. The city of Patna occupies an area of 136 square kilometres, of which the municipal area constitutes 99 square kilometres while the suburban area constitutes 36 square kilometres. The average elevation of the city is 53 metres. A characteristic feature of the geography of Patna is at the confluence of rivers. There’s a narrow strip of high land about 8 kilometres wide along the southern bank of the river. Patna comes under high risk seismic zone-IV, very vulnerable to major earthquakes. So far in the recent history no major earthquake has occurred. Patna also falls under the risk zone for floods and cyclones.
