Places to Visit in darjeeling

The dazzling snow peaks of the world’s third highest peak, Kanchenjunga overlook the hill town of Darjeeling, and work as an alluring site for tourists. Highly acclaimed for its beautiful tea gardens, Darjeeling also got popular after being recognised as the UNESCO World Heritage Site for the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Darjeeling is one of the oldest hill stations in India with a perfect combination of modern as well as colonial charm. Whether you are looking for a lazy, weekend getaway away from the hot cities or you are a nature enthusiast seeking some adventure, Darjeeling offers plenty of options for everyone. Initially, Darjeeling was just a cluster of villages that was administered by Nepal and Sikkim. Darjeeling gained prominence during the mid 19th century. Because of its pleasant climate, the British established it into a hill station. In 1849, the British annexed the area and Darjeeling became a part of British India.

As many Tibetan refugees moved to Darjeeling after Tibet was taken by China, the cultural diversity in the area is also a favourable factor that led this movement. There are several tourist places in Darjeeling which bear testimony to this rich cultural diversity and promote the message of ‘Unity in Diversity’.

The best time to visit Darjeeling is considered to be between April and June. During this time period, the weather in Darjeeling remains pleasant and ideal, and tourists can explore the town without worrying about heavy rainfalls that often lead to roadblocks in the area.

Some of the popular places to visit in Darjeeling are:

• Observatory Hill
• Lloyd’s Botanical Garden
• Toy Train Darjeeling
• Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre
• Tiger Hill

Places To Visit In darjeeling

Top Tourist Places to Visit in Darjeeling:
Among several famous places in Darjeeling, some of the best places are as follows:

• Observatory Hill- Located near Chowrasta Square in Darjeeling, Observatory Hill is a popular tourist spot in the town to observe the panoramic views of snow-clad peaks, including the Mount Kanchenjunga. As taxis and vehicles are not allowed in the area, you have to walk uphill for 15 minutes to reach the top of the Hill. It also has a temple at its summit called Mahakal Temple which was originally occupied by Bhutia Busty Monastery. Upon entering the temple you will find that both religions exist harmoniously as Hindu priests chant their prayers and the Buddhist monks read from their holy scripts, concertedly.

• Lloyd’s Botanical Garden- Among several places to see in Darjeeling, Lloyd’s Botanical Garden proves to be a paradise for people who love plants. It was established in 1878 in the heart of Darjeeling. The garden is home to some of the most exotic and endangered species of plants such as magnolia, cotoneaster, wild geranium and rhododendron. The most intriguing of all is the ‘Weeping Willow’, named so because of its drooping branches and leaves which give a weeping impression.

• Toy Train Darjeeling- Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since December 1999, Toy Train Darjeeling provides an unmatched experience when it comes to absorbing the magnificent beauty of mountains. It was the first public transport built by the Britishers that linked the higher and lower areas of the town. The diesel engines used these days are faster and more powerful than the original steam engines which still operate in some of these trains. Although it moves at a snail’s pace, riding on the toy train is a joyful experience to get a breathtaking view of the Himalayas.

• Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre- Established on October 2, 1959, Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre facilitates as a rehabilitation centre for Tibetan refugees who followed their leader Dalai Lama and escaped from Tibet at the outset of the Tibetan uprising. Today, it is the home to 650 refugees. The production of Tibetan handicraft like woollen carpets, shawls, carved wooden crafts and leather items is the main activity at Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre. If you want to buy these items, they are available for sale at the outlet located in premises of the centre.

• Tiger Hill- The marvellous spectacle of the sun rising over a 250 km of Himalayan horizon makes Tiger Hill a popular tourist attraction. The blaze of rapidly changing colours of the snow-clad peaks as the sun strikes is a magnificent view. On a clear day, you can even catch glimpses of the Mount Everest from here. Interestingly, this is also the summit of Ghoom, which is the highest railway station in the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. You can avail taxi or jeep services which leave from Darjeeling towards Tiger Hill at 4 in the morning.

• Peace Pagoda- One of the most popular attractions in Darjeeling, the Peace Pagoda was built under the guidance of Nichidatsu Fujii who was a Buddhist monk from Japan and founder of the Nipponzan-Myo-ho-ji Buddhist Order. The Pagoda showcases four golden statues of Lord Buddha carved out on the wall. It stands as a sacred symbol of spirituality, brotherhood and peace. The view from the Pagoda’s top is quite awe-aspiring.

Darjeeling Sightseeing by car:

There are several taxis available at taxi stands around the main town area that provide services for Darjeeling Sightseeing. The private taxis and travel agents sell various tour packages such as the 7-point package that includes seven places to visit such as the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute/Zoo, Cable Car, Peace Pagoda, etc. and takes about 5 hours to complete the tour. Point-to-point dedicated taxi rides start at Rs. 150 for even short distances. The most economical way is to board a shared taxi that charges Rs. 10 for short distance rides and Rs. 20 for longer distances. During the season, these shared taxis also operate for few select local sightseeing tours like 3-point tour in Darjeeling and few other local tours. You can also explore Darjeeling by your own car as this gives you a chance to stop at places of your choice and explore their beauty.
