Places to Visit in mumbai

Mumbai, previously known as Bombay, is a beautiful blend of cultures and lifestyles. It is one of the biggest and most populated metropolitan cities of India. Mumbai is a collection of 7 islands which were earlier home to communities of fishing colonies. Mumbai truly reflects India’s diversity as the city has some of Asia’s biggest slums along with the world’s most expensive houses. It also houses India’s most elaborate film industry- Bollywood. It is a major centre of art, culture, music, dance and theatre in the country.

The city proudly boasts a long colonial history as it was a prominent base for the Indian independence movement. After India attained independence in 1947, the city incorporated many areas in Bombay such as Malad, Thane, Andheri, etc., and the area of Bombay expanded drastically. And, finally in 1960 Bombay became the capital of Maharashtra. The city was renamed Mumbai in 1996 after the name of goddess ‘Mumbadevi’. If you go for a stroll in the lanes of South Bombay you will still get to witness the remnants of the city’s glorious past and can also come across several distinct markets, temples, fancy restaurants and a nightlife that is one of its kinds. Mumbai has some of the best and most beautiful colonial architecture.
