Pune is located in the state of Maharashtra in India, at an elevation of 560 m (1,840 ft) above sea level. The city spans across an area of 710 sq. km. (270 sq mi) and the state capital of Mumbai is 149 km away. It lies on the western edge of the Deccan plateau and is bounded by the Sahyadri mountain range. The city comprises of many hills, with the highest hill being Vetal Hill at 800 m (2,600 ft) above sea level. The Sinhagad fort lies just outside the city, at an altitude of 1,300 m. Central Pune lies at the confluence of the Mutha and Mula rivers. The Pavana and Indrayani rivers cross the north-western outskirts of metropolitan Pune. The seismically active zone near Koyna Dam lies about 100 km (62 mi) south of the city. It comes under Zone 3, making it prone to earthquakes. Moderate and low-intensity earthquakes have hit the area in the past.
