Thakur Sahib Vibhoji Ajoji Jadeja of the Rajput Jadeja clan found Rajkot in the year 1620. From the time of foundation before 1807, Rajkot has been ruled by the Jadeja or the Mughals intermittently owing to the politics of power in the country and the empires. From 1807, the British took over Rajkot and made it the capital of then Saurashtra state to be later merged with Bombay state later. On 1 May 1960, Rajkot became a part of Gujarat state. Gujarat was struck with a devastating earthquake on 26 January 2001, measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale. Today the city is urbanising at a fast pace and is ranked 22nd fastest growing city in the world.
