A quiet little hamlet situated in the interiors of Maharashtra, Shirdi only came into the limelight when the sage Sai Baba came to visit and lived here till the year 1918, when he passed away. He was believed to be about 16 years old when he first appeared in the city engrossed in a serious penance under a neem tree. Over the next 50 years or so, he devoted himself to helping the poor and suffering. No one knows where he came from and to what religion he belonged. His teachings and views went above all religions and beliefs. Today, anything that had a connection with him or his life has become a part of the town. Devotees and tourists head to Shirdi every year from all corners of the world. Though there are other places of interest within this town, the main attraction continues to be the Sai Mandir.
