Shopping In bikaner

One of the reasons Bikaner packages are a rage is that the city is a heaven for shopaholics. Be it any place in Rajasthan, buying local handicrafts and heirlooms of its culture is an important part of travellers’ vacation. Among the most vibrant and liveliest Rajasthani cities, Bikaner is the perfect place to shop for souvenirs. In every bazaar in the city, you will discover something new as the local culture is extremely rich. You can visit the Kote Gate, Station Road, Mahatma Gandhi Road and Junagarh Fort markets to satisfy your shopping addiction. Want to know what all you can buy in this colourful city? Then read ahead.
Ornaments
The ethnic jewellery of Rajasthan is widely famous, drawing buyers from all parts of the world in large numbers. In Bikaner, you can shop for exquisite hand-cut gems as the state is a hub for the skill. Rajasthan produces a range of silver and gold jewellery, which is different for different regions within the state. Whether it is the famous Kundan jewellery or the intricate Thewa, in which glass and gold are fused together, the range of ornaments you can purchase in Bikaner is immense.
Paintings
In Bikaner, you can buy adornment not just for yourself, but also for your home. Art lovers can shop for miniature paintings that are a pride of the desert state. Done on materials like silk, cotton, paper and even ivory, these paintings depict scenes from the Hindu mythology as well as moments from the life of Mughal emperors like Shah Jahan. The history of Bikaner can be studied from these paintings as the scenes pertain to the local life of that time.
Phads or scroll paintings are another great buy when in the desert city of Bikaner. Up to 30 feet long, a typical Phad narrates the adventurous exploits of local folk legends. Another type of paintings, popular in the state, is Pichwai that depict scenes from the childhood of Lord Krishna.
Decorative Items
If you are out looking for decorative items for your house, then Bikaner is the place to be. You should shop for figurine, idols of deities and utensils for your house or even jharokhas and carved panels if your house has a lawn. All these are made from a variety of stones like marble and soapstone, and you would be astounded at their immense detailing.
Once used to forge weapons, the skill of the local metalworkers is now utilised in making designer pillboxes, figurines, vases and photo frames. You can also purchase terracotta idols of deities from the city bazaars for your home. Handcrafted wooden items like snuff boxes, figurines, toys, miniature animal sculptures and chests can also spruce up your house.
Household Objects
Apart from souvenirs, you can also roam around in Bikaner to shop for household objects that are unique to Rajasthan in their decoration. Rajasthani craftsmen produce unique terracotta hookas, piggy banks, chillums and jars that are functional as well as decorative objects. The painted pottery of Bikaner is especially renowned, and you will find innumerable shops dealing in it.
You can also buy the famous painted pottery, made from quartz, fuller’s earth, sodium sulphate and raw glaze. The use of the oxides of cobalt and copper give the pottery its distinctive blue colour. The soap dishes, flower vases, coasters, trays, plates, door knobs, fruit bowls and floor tiles, made with this technique, are painted with Mughal-inspired motifs or images of birds and animals.
Textiles
One of the most visual aspects of the rich culture of Bikaner is the colourful clothes the locals wear. Among the hordes of printed fabrics available in the city are Bandhani sarees. To make it, the yarn strands are first tied at various junctures and then dyed in a variety of colours. The state is also renowned for its printed carpets and dhurries that have been made here since the 17th century.
Leather Items
Apart from mojaris and juttis, Rajasthanis also make incredible musical instruments and chairs out of leather. The people of Bikaner pride themselves on producing the finest shields, juttis, flower vases and lampshades from camel leather.
Once you have shopped in Bikaner, you will surely visit it again to buy more of this incredible stuff.
