Shopping In cuttack

Shopping in Cuttack

Whenever you are travelling to a new destination, exploring the local markets becomes a major part of your itinerary. And when the place is as culturally rich as Cuttack, it becomes all the more necessary. The city can be rightfully called the shopping hub of Odisha as everything that the state is famous for can be bought at the various shops here. The city was known for its textiles and handicrafts in the bygone era, and these still holds great importance. Some forms of art that have vanished from the rest of the world, hold their ground here. Therefore, buying a few of these articles is a must while on a trip to Cuttack. Keep reading to know the various things that are a symbol of the vibrant culture of Cuttack:

Bomkai Sarees

Among the uncountable things that Odisha is known for are the bomkai sarees. The handlooms that originated from the small village of Bomkai in the Ganjam district quickly gained fame to become a speciality of the region. Cuttack is the cultural capital of the state and women here prefer to wear authentic bomkai sarees. Therefore, the city is dotted with shops where you can find a traditional Odiya silk dress for you or your loved one. These are either silk, or cotton, and you can buy the one, which suits you the best.

Paintings

Another thing the state is famous for is patachitra, which is the art of painting on a scroll or piece of cloth. One of the oldest art forms in the state, these usually depict a story from the Hindu mythology. The beautifully drawn intricate paintings can be easily seen while strolling in the markets. Ganjapas, the traditional playing cards in Odisha, is another thing you should add to your collection of peculiar items. Their history can be dated back to centuries when the male members of Odiya families played with these for amusement. These cards are made in the patachitra form of art, representing a character from the Hindu mythology.

The artists of Odisha also excel in painting on a palm leaf. This ancient art originated here and since the emergence of paper, has become restricted to only a few places in the world, including Odisha. A palm leaf painting can be an incredible piece for you to decorate your house and give a unique touch to it.

Silver Items

Be it decorative items made of the metal or ornaments designed with it, Cuttack is a great place to buy silver objects. If you like intricate jewellery, then you should check out silver filigree or tarakashi, as it is referred to in the local language, made with twisted threads or small beads. These make for you unique gift to present to a family member or friend. The people of Cuttack produce fascinating objects with silver wires that will give a touch of elegance to your home.

When it comes to decorating the house, wooden objects can also do the job quite well. While on a tour of Cuttack, you can buy delicate items, coated with lacquer and adorned with colourful motifs.

Where to Shop

There is no dearth of places you can go to buy the traditional textiles and handicraft items in Cuttack. Ahalya Market Complex, RCM Shopping Center, Choudhary Bazaar, Tibetan Market, Sahebzada Bazar and Madani Market Dawate are some popular destinations that are nothing short of a heaven for any shopaholic. Besides, you can also find government emporiums that sell a variety of cultural items of Odisha, in order to preserve and promote the culture of Cuttack.
