Shopping In jammu

Shopping in Jammu

There could hardly be any place better for shopping in the entire state of J&K than the city of Jammu. Here, you can buy merchandise of various Indian and international brands as well as traditional handicrafts made by the artistic people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Other than its awe-inspiring landscape and diverse cuisine, Jammu and Kashmir is also known for its culture; the handicrafts sold here give an insight into the heritage of the locals. Here is what you can buy during your time in the city with Jammu packages.

Carpets

The first thing you should check out while exploring the local markets in Jammu are the colourful handmade carpets. The origin of the art of hand weaving carpets in Kashmir can be traced back to the 15th century. Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin brought carpet weavers from Persia and Central Asia, and the locals quickly learned this art from them. Today, not just woollen but Kashmiri silk carpets are also considered among the best in the world. You can also buy Kashmiri namdas to decorate the floor of your room. These cotton or wool carpets are characterised by their detailed designs and bright colours.

Shawls

Another Kashmiri cloth famous all over the world is shawl or rug. The most admirable aspect of the shawl is its intricate embroidery. Jammu is the perfect place for you to buy an authentic Pashmina shawl as there are many shops selling it. Pashmina is derived from the hair of goats found at higher altitudes in the Himalayan region. If you are looking to save money, then you can buy a shawl made by mixing pashmina with ordinary wool.

Silverware

Strolling in the markets, you will definitely come across silver items, made using the naqashi technique. Jammu is among the centres of silver art pieces in the region, and there are a number of shops here from where you can buy these. You can purchase a shiny photo frame or a small silver jewellery box for your accessories. Bowls, plates, flower vases and trays are some other items made with the naqashi technique that you can buy. Lotuses and chinar leaves are a few common patterns you will see on these items.

Pheran

When in Jammu, you can dress like a local, and for that you would need a pheran. Pherans are the traditional gowns made from wool or tweed that provide warmth to the body. While men wear simple pherans, women’s dresses are embellished with impressive floral designs on the neck and cuffs. Kashmiri women often accompany a pheran with a silver headpiece, called kasaba. Unmarried Muslim women wear skull caps that feature amazing embroidery.

Baskets

Willow baskets are quite famous in Jammu and Kashmir, and the locals create these with fascinating designs. These are surprisingly strong and can hold heavy things. Baskets of all shapes and sizes, from a small one for holding jewellery to a large one the size of a suit case, are sold here.

Wood Work

The locals also take pride in the delicate wooden items they produce. They can take a log of wood and turn it into a piece of art. If you are staying for a few days in Jammu, you can convey the artisans the design you want, and they will create it for you. The images they draw are inspired by the culture of Jammu, and in these, you will often see flowers, leaves or birds, symbolising how close to nature the locals are.

Papier Mache

While in Jammu, you can also buy intriguing papier mache handicrafts. It is an art of creating an object by sticking a layer of paper onto another. The locals not just make charming designs, but also paint them in bright colours to create a masterpiece.

After knowing what to buy in Jammu, it is also essential to know where to buy these. If you look at the map of Jammu, you will realise that it is dotted with numerous street markets and shopping malls, where you can splurge on shopping. Hari Market and Vir Marg are two of the most popular shopping districts in the city. Apart from these, Raghunath Market, adjacent to Raghunath Temple, is a good place to buy Kashmiri handicrafts and traditional Dogra jewellery.
