During ancient times, Sonmarg was known as a gateway on the Silk Road, connecting Kashmir with Gulf countries and China, through Gilgit. The name ‘Sonmarg’ has been derived from the words ‘sona’ and ‘marg’, which literally means ‘meadow of gold’. After the Independence of India, Sonmarg, a town in Kashmir became a part of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Today, it is known for being a base camp for nearby tourist areas such as Amarnath Temple and the Ladakh region. Though Sonmarg is generally a very peaceful place, the Kashmir region has experienced conflicts, militant attacks and insurgency in the past. Hence, the area has a heavy presence of the Indian Army as it is a strategic region.
