Srinagar is located at Kashmir Valley, in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. The valley is bounded by the Himalayas on all sides. Srinagar is situated at an elevation of 1,585 m (5,200 ft.) and spans across an area of 294 km2 (114 sq. mi). It lies on either sides of the Jhelum River. The river passes through the city and through the valley, expanding in the Dal Lake. Nine old bridges connect the two parts of the city. There are numerous lakes and swamps in and around the city, including the Dal, Khushal Sar, Nigeen, Anchar, Gil Sar and Hokersar, which is a wetland near Srinagar. Thousands of migratory bird’s flock to Hokersar and other wetlands, from Siberia and Central Asia in the winter season. It is 14 km (8.7 mi) north to Srinagar, spread over 13.75 sq.km (5.31 sq. mi) including lake and marshy area.
