Tamil Nadu’s department of transport, TNSTC, manages the transportation within the city. For local transportation, the city is served by two main bus stations- Chatram Bus Station and Central Bus Stand. Buses from these terminals ply to different parts of the city. Tiruchirappalli Airport, Tiruchirappalli Fort Railway Station and Tiruchirappalli Town Railway Station are well connected by local road transport.
Three-wheeler, locally known as auto-rickshaw, is the most common mode of commuting within the city. One can spot auto-rickshaws in every nook and corner of the city. These auto-rickshaws ply on hire basis as well as on shared mode. You can also hire private taxis from local agencies such as Yes Yes Cabs, Trichy Friends Track Call Taxi, etc.
Hiring a car on rent for sightseeing purposes, is a convenient option. Some of the important rental agencies are Trichy Call Taxi and Travels, Savaari and many more.
Currently there is no metro train in Trichy. There is a plan to introduce monorail system in the city.
As with any major Indian city, Trichy has a good network of local train service. There are more than 10 railway stations within the city and its suburbs, which are all interconnected by local passenger train service. Trichy also has good connectivity with the adjoining areas outside the city. Many of these trains originate from the city’s main railway station. Some of the important trains are Tanjore Passenger, Thirvarur Passenger, Trichy Passenger and Nagore Passenger.
Trekking has become increasingly popular because of the wonderful locations in proximity to the city. There’s a hill station just 80 kilometres north. It’s aptly named as Pachamalai, which means “Green Mountain”. It’s an ideal place for a weekend getaway. Another place famous among the trekkers is Pulliancholai. It is 72 kilometres away from the city. There are few caves that one can explore. There’s also a beautiful waterfall here named Akaya Ganga. The water from this fall is supposed to have medicinal properties.
