Shiva Temple

The temple stands magnificently over the rocky outcrop lying on the right bank of the river Betwa (ancient Vetrawati). It is about 32 km south-east of Bhopal. This unique temple left incomplete for some unknown reason is ascribed to the illustrious King Bhojadeva (1010-1055 A.D) of Paramara dynasty of Central India, who was a great patron of art, architecture and learning. King Bhojadeva was a renowned author of more than eleven books of which Samarangana Sutradhara, a celebrated book on architecture is the most important.

Outstanding Universal Value

The colossal Shiva Temple at Bhojpur and its setting can be epitomized in one word 'Grandeur'. It truly reflected the spirit of its times, when the most powerful ruler of the Parmaras, Raja Bhoj was at his zenith. So much so that a saying, 'All the world is Parmara', came into vogue. The setting of the temple on the bank of the largest man-made lake then gave rise to the popular saying in Hindi 'Tal ho to Bhopal Tal baki sab Talaiya', which means 'If there is a lake it is Bhopal lake, others are mere ponds'. It is not gigantism alone that makes it unique, but also several other aspects, which are as follows.

1) One of the biggest Shivalinga The Siva Linga is 2.25 m in height and with the Yonipitha it is nearly 6.65 m high. It is the largest Siva Linga considering its girth and height.

2) Stencil Drawings of Architectural Pieces engraved on rock The precinct of the Temple at Bhojpur has a large number of true to scale line drawings of architectural pieces engraved on the rock surface. These were intended to be carved out from the rock, and placed on the temple. This is evident by the number of architectural pieces, which are found lying in the various stages of quarrying and chiseling. Besides the stencil drawing plan of various portions of the architecture shows how the temple construction was to be continued. No where else do we find architectural drawings carved so meticulously before embarking upon the actual construction.

3) The only extant example of a ramp The extant construction of a ramp for taking the architectural pieces to the top, up to the ceiling, is unique to Bhojpur, as no where else such a large extant ramp is in existence.

4) The biggest man made lake. The lake during the early period of its existence was spread over 250 square miles with a depth of 10 metres to 30 metres and is known as the largest man made lake spread over from Bhopal to Bhojpur, nearly 19 km wide. The importance of Bhojpur lies not only in the magnificent structure, its inspiring settings, but also the stencil engravings, ramp, semi-carved architectural pieces, all of which depict the continuation of construction of the temple as if frozen in time. The ancient construction technology of huge stones and mud mortar that could dam such a large lake is another unique feature.

5) Mason marks in considerable numbers Another distinctive aspect is the large number of mason marks found on the surface of the architectural pieces, these perhaps again indicate that the temple construction was not complete. As it is believed that once the temple works are completed and the payment to the masons are made the mason marks are rubbed off.
