Also known as 'Gandhi National Memorial' because of its close association with Mahatma Gandhi, the palace is steeped in history. In 2003, it was declared a ‘monument of national importance' by the Archaeological Survey of India. Constructed in five years, the 19 acres of land, with its sprawling lawns and impressive arches, is captivating. Legend has it that the palace was built to counter unemployment at a time when a famine broke out. Around 1000 plus people from the neighbouring village/s were gainfully employed. Though to a great degree Islamic, the palace boasts of Italian architecture. Its five great halls and grand verandahs add to its splendour.
