Ramnagar Palace Complex is impeccably set on the edge of a hilltop suspended at an altitude of 2,716 feet above ocean level at Udhampur in Jammu. The royal palace is encompassed by picturesque panoramic view with hilly topography and vegetation developed along its sides. Constructed by Raja Suchet Singh, the Purana Mahal comprises of a compound of rooms ascending to three stories with high walls and watchtowers at regular interims. The walls of the rooms are adorned with stucco work and painted with floral patterns. The wooden members of the ceiling are equally ornamented. The edges of the rooftops have projections in the form of lotus blossoms. This fort has two courtyards in front of the primary royal residence with raised corners or Burj's made to show up as small sceneries. Behind these corners are rooms and halls lined on either side of the passageway. Sheesh Mahal, Rang Mahal, and Darbar Hall are on the left side of the entry door. Apart from being a valiant general, Raja Suchet was also an incredible connoisseur of art. Out of the many things he built, Purana Mahal or Ramnagar palace was the most prominent one.
