Dubbed as an ‘island of a thousand temples’, Bali in Indonesia is a lush landscape of volcanic mountains, sandy beaches, emerald paddy fields and a brilliant marine life. Bali is a quintessential getaway that promises enough sun and sand, some truly invigorating Balinese massage therapies, plush resorts tucked away amid wilderness, old world temples and a horde of cultural activities. If you are a beach bum or take to snorkeling, diving or surfing, this beautiful island is your place to be. With some fine stretch of sand skirting a turquoise sea and a slew of chic cafes and bars, you will have a great time unwinding here.
With the dramatic volcanic hills standing sentinel over the island with an array of hillside temples, the scenery Bali opens up is breathtaking. A dominantly Hindu city, here you can experience the colorful religious procession carried out by the locals dressed like mythological characters, wearing elaborate headgear and masks and marching down from one of the many temples as traditional folk music plays on. There are several activities to do in Bali such as visiting the hillside temple of Pura Luhur Batukau, or Bali’s spiritual centre, Gunung Agung, the tallest peak. Head south to the city of Kuta for some great food and cocktails. The bars here are lively, play great bands, dish out ethnic and global cuisine, and create wonderful atmospherics. Bali also houses some popular yoga and meditation retreats, else you can even head to the scenic resort towns of Seminyak, Nusa Dua and Sanur. The Butik Peninsula is also a beautiful beach getaway.
To experience the culture of Bali, Ubud is your destination. However, some of the verdant paddy fields and historical structures are towards the east and west of the island. But surfing lovers and seasoned divers mostly head to either the north or west Bali - these areas are less crowded and hence more pristine. There are some interesting things you can shop for when in Bali. Head to Seminyak that is dotted with pretty boutiques and stores with street fashion and ethnic wear. Fun activities in Bali abound, you can take your pick between the ones you enjoy most. Be it good food, a spot of shopping, a spa therapy, cultural activities or some underwater exploration, Bali has it all.
