Also known as Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, Athens International Airport (AIA) is located at around 12 miles from the city center, in Spata. The airport witnessed a passenger traffic of 20,017,530 in 2016, with an increase of 10.7% from previous year. The total number of aircraft movements in 2016 was 189,137, showing an increase of 8.7% from the previous year. Athens International Airport is Greece’s busiest airport and the 28th busiest airport in Europe. The airport has received the best airport award in Southern Europe by Skytrax in 2005 and 2008. It also received ‘The Airport of the Year’ in the 10-30 million passengers category by the Air Transport News.

Terminals Trivia

Athens International Airport currently has two terminals: Main Terminal and Satellite Terminal. The main terminal has 144 check-in desks and three levels. Level one is dedicated for arrivals, level two is for departures, and level three is the food-court. This terminal handles all the intra-Schengen flights and many non-Schengen flights. The satellite terminal can accommodate more than six million passengers and has two levels, one for arrivals and two for departures. Vueling, easyJet, and Ryanair are some of the airlines operating from this terminal.

Transport Facilities

There are various transportation methods that connect the passengers to the airport, including metro lines, trains, buses, taxis, and rental cars.

Metro Line 3, a comfortable means of transport, connects you from the airport to the city. Also, the Suburban Rail connects the airport to Athens Central Railway Station and SKA.

Taxis are available outside Exit 3 of the arrivals level and Limousine and mini-buses can also be availed from the counter between Exit 3 and Exit 4. Rental cars with a variety of vehicles can also be booked from the various counters present at the airport. Regular buses operate from the arrivals area, and X93, X95, X96, and X97 are the four bus lines that connect to the city.
