Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok

New Bangkok International Airport, also known as Suvarnabhumi Airport, serves the city of Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. Land was purchased for this airport in 1973, but political events stalled the project. The New Bangkok International Airport company was opened in 1996, but the airport started operations in 2006. It covers an area of 8000 acres and is one of the largest international airports in Southeast Asia. The airport is built on a grand scale and has numerous modern amenities. The name “Suvarnabhumi” means “land of gold” in Sanskrit, referring to the Hindu-Buddhist golden kingdom. It has the largest share of air traffic in Thailand, ranking 20th in the world in terms of passenger traffic (2016 statistics).

Terminals Trivia

Suvarnabhumi Airport has three terminals: two international terminals and a domestic terminal. The international terminals are situated next to each other and the domestic terminal is located 500 metres away from Terminal 2. The domestic terminal is connected to the international terminal through an air-conditioned walkway and a free bus shuttle. The passenger traffic in 2016 was 55, 892, 428 million, although the airport’s original capacity is only up to 45 million. The airport’s main passenger terminal is the fourth largest in the world.

Shop, Eat, and Relax

There are myriad choices available when you want to satisfy your hunger. For affordable delicacies, drop in at The Miracle Food Village near Entry Gate 5. For more expensive and varied fare, go up to the third floor for Italian pizzas, gourmet coffee, burgers, and dimsums. You will find a Thai bistro and a sushi bar, amongst other places.

You can indulge in retail therapy to your heart’s content here. There are local handicrafts available as well as luxury designer brands. At the International Arrivals and Departures Halls and Transit Hall located on the third floor, there are more than 270 retail outlets. However, local handicrafts are more expensive at the airport than in the city itself. There are also other facilities available like spa and massage, tour service, transit hotels, luggage wrapping service, and souvenir shops.

Transport Facilities

On 23 August 2010, an Airport Rail Link (ARL) was opened at Suvarnabhumi Airport, operated by the SRTET which is a subsidiary of SRT or the State Railway of Thailand. The SRT also operates a suburban commuter train service between a few stations. The airport is well-connected by buses, metered taxis, and a sky lane for bicycles. There is also an Airport Express Bus service and Airport Limousine service to take you to your destination.
