Beijing Capital International Airport, Beijing

Beijing Capital International Airport or Beijing Airport is the primary airport serving Beijing, China. It is 32 km away from the city center and is the main hub for Air China, China’s flag carrier airline. It is also the hub for China Eastern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, and China Southern Airlines. The Beijing Airport was inaugurated on March 2, 1958, with a small terminal building. Several expansions were made to the airport over the years that resulted in the present airport building. AirBridge Cargo Airlines, Air China Cargo, and Korean Air Cargo are some cargo flights operating from here.

The airport was ranked the busiest airport in Asia in 2009 and the second busiest airport in the world in 2010, both in terms of passenger traffic. In 2016, the airport handled a passenger traffic of over 94 million and 6 million aircraft movements. It was the 13th busiest airport by cargo traffic in the world. In 2015, Beijing Airport was among the 20 best airports in the world.

Terminals Trivia

There are 3 terminals at Beijing Airport, namely, Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3. Terminal 1 is a domestic terminal, whereas Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 operate both domestic and international flights. Terminal 3 serves the domestic and international flights that do not operate from the other 2 terminals.

Terminal 1 has 16 gates and operates Hainan Airlines, Beijing Capital Airlines, Tianjin Airlines, among others. Terminal 3 has 3 divisions- T3-C, T3-D, and T3-E, where T3-C is for check-in and baggage claim, T3-D serves charter flights, and T3-E is for international arrivals and departures. The terminal operates airlines such as British Airways, Qatar Airways, and Qantas Airlines. Terminals 1 and 2 are connected by walkways and all the 3 terminals are connected by shuttle buses.

There are banks, ATMs, VIP lounges, public telephones, left luggage counters, information desks, currency exchange centers, nursing rooms, locker rooms, rest rooms, and children’s play areas at the airport. Facilities like luggage trolleys, Wi-Fi, first aid, etc. are available here.

The Airport Express Line connects the terminals 2 and 3 to the city, with timings 6:35 to 11:10 at Terminal 2 and 6:20 to 10:50 at Terminal 3. The airport bus and taxi services provide connectivity to the city from the airport. The buses are available at all 3 terminals. Additionally, taxis and cars are available for transportation to and from the city. For inter-terminal transport, there are shuttles available.
