Brussels Airport is an international airport, located at Zaventem, 12 km north-east of Brussels, the capital of Belgium. The airport is currently operated by the Brussels Airport Company N.V./ S.A. Founded by German occupying forces in 1940, in the Melsbroek municipality, the airbase was expanded to include a civilian airport in the Zaventem municipality. In 2006, the airport was voted 2nd best Airport in Europe, by Airport Service Quality Awards (recognized by ACI -- Airports Council International).

The Brussels Airport, is situated at an elevation of 184 feet, and has three asphalt runways, which are 9800 feet, 10,535 feet, and 11,936 feet long, respectively. It has a single terminal building consisting of different levels. The Airport railway station is on -1, buses and taxis arrive at 0, arrivals are located on level 2, and departures at level 3. There are 2 piers, A and B, which are linked to levels 2 and 3 in the main building, and linked to each other by the ‘Connector’.

Services at the airport include luggage services like Porter Service (pre-booked), baggage wrapping, luggage lockers, and Lost and Found Service. Free baggage trolleys, children’s play area, babies room, and wheelchairs and other assistance for the physically challenged are available via pre-booked Axxicom Airport Caddy. Other facilities include convenience stores, pharmacy, unlimited free Wi-Fi access, ATMs for EURO, Travelex currency exchange, money transfer, prayer rooms and a meditation area, meeting and convention facilities at the Regus Skyport Meeting Center or the Sheraton Brusssels Airport Hotel, PostPunt, and a medical center.

The airport has a new duty-free shop selling branded perfumes, cosmetics, champagnes, spirits and wines, sweets, and typical Belgian chocolate and beer. At Brussels and More, check out a wide range of branded products, like diamond jewelry, watches, leather products, and apparel.

Several bars, cafes and eateries like Black Pearls, Leffe Bar, Starbucks, Panos, Rouge, and Grabandfly, are scattered at the airport. All lounges are located beyond screening. The commonly used Diamond Lounges are available for all passengers from all airlines in both Pier A and B. Business lounges of airlines like Brussels Airlines Iberia, British Airways are also present.

Transport Facilities

Airport transfer is extremely convenient with trains, buses, taxis, rental cabs, and parking for cars and cycles. The airport train station is located below the terminal (basement level 1) and has trains to all major cities in Belgium, as well as international destinations like the Netherlands. The bus station is located on level 0, one floor below the arrivals hall, with buses to city center, and other cities. Car rentals like Avis Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, and Europcar have desks at the arrivals hall. Licensed taxis are available in front of Arrivals. Wheelchair users can contact Taxi Hendricks, while chauffeured services are provided by Directway and Modern Car. Drivenow and Zipcar provide car-sharing services.
