Bandaranaike International Airport, Colombo

Colombo International Airport is also known as the Bandaranaike International Airport, named in honor of the former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. It is located about 35 km north of the capital city of Colombo. The airport sees an average of 9.25 million passengers in a year. In the year 2012, Airbus 8380-800 of the Emirates airlines landed in this airport, making it the first time that an Airbus had landed in Sri Lanka. The airport has a single asphalt runway, but there are plans to build a new one by the government. The second phase of development at the airport is being done with assistance from the Japanese. It is slated to be finished by the year 2019. Colombo International Airport has a single runway with an asphalt surface. The take-off distance of the airport is 3,441 meters and the landing distance is 3,350 meters.

Terminals Trivia

The airport has 2 passenger terminals and 1 cargo terminal. Terminal 1 is the largest of the three and was opened in the year 1967. It has a total of 12 gates and 2 lounges. Terminal 3 was inaugurated in the year 2012 and is mainly used for handling domestic flights. The cargo terminal is used to operate cargo flights. Terminal 2 is yet to be opened. It is proposed to be operational in 2019 as part of the second phase of development and is going to have 8 gates and 14 passenger boarding bridges.
