Hamad International Airport, doha

Hamad International Airport (HIA) has been functional since April 2014 after Doha International Airport stopped operations, primarily because of over-utilization of its facilities. Spread across 6,00,000 square meters, its passenger terminal is the biggest building in Qatar. With a magnificent aquatic theme-based architecture, HIA serves more than 30 million passengers across 3,60,000 flights. The two most impressive landmarks in the airport include the mosque with a glass dome and the Islamic control tower in a crescent shape. In 2017, Hamad International Airport received a 5-star airport recognition by Skytrax, the first airport in the Middle East to get this title.

Terminals Trivia

Designed in an oval shape to minimize the distance for travelers to walk between several areas within the airport, Terminal 1 with its state-of-the-art infrastructure is 12 times bigger than the terminal at Doha International Airport. The terminal houses five concourses from Concourse A to E across numerous levels. It has a total of 140 check-in counters, distributed across 10 rows to expedite the check-in process for travelers. In addition, it offers priority check-in service for Business Class and First Class passengers of Qatar Airways. Also, keeping in mind the needs of travelers with limited mobility, the check-in counters have one adapted service desk in each row.
A proposal to build Terminal 2 is under discussion so as to be able to cater to the increasing passenger numbers.

Shop, Eat, and Relax

Hamad International Airport is renowned for the outstanding amenities it offers to its travelers. Facilities like dedicated prayer rooms, separate smoking rooms, exclusive lounge for travelers with reduced mobility, interactive play areas for children, parent’s rooms to take care of infants, wheelchair assistance, washrooms for passengers requiring special assistance, and medical units with trained medical professionals ensure travelers have a hassle-free journey.

For all shopaholics, HIA is a shopping haven, especially with duty-free shopping. In addition, pick up goodies across product groups such as electronics, jewelry, souvenirs, and books. High street fashion from top notch brands including Bvlgari, Mont Blanc, Tag Heuer, Swarovski, and Victoria’s Secret are also available at the airport. Travelers can also avail an array of dining options, Italian, European, American, and Arabic being some of them. Avail recreational comforts at the spacious lounges or enjoy a game of squash at the squash court. You also have a gym and an indoor swimming pool, in case you wish to spend some time there.

Transport Facilities

Once you are at Doha, traveling to and from Hamad International Airport is the last concern that you may have. The well-maintained buses operating to and from the airport by Mowasalat, the state-owned transport company of Qatar, take you to several local destinations. If you hold an international driving license, you can hire a car and explore the place on your own. Booking a “Karwa” taxi is another convenient option. These taxis are also run by Mowasalat. Else, to travel with ultimate panache, you can book a luxurious chauffeur-driven limousine and go around the city.
