Gibraltar International Airport, also known as North Front Airport, serves the British overseas territory of Gibraltar as well as the neighboring parts of southern Spain such as Campo de Gibraltar and Costa del Sol. It is located about 2 km from the town center.
In 2015, the airport handled over 444,000 passengers. It has been ranked as the fifth most extreme airport in the world by the History Channel program “Most Extreme Airports”, because it is exposed to strong winds around the rock and across the Bay of Algeciras.
Gibraltar Airport has only one terminal. This new terminal was built in 2011 to handle the increasing number of passengers at this airport. It has two baggage carousels and three departure gates. The airport has a passenger capacity of 1.5 million per year. In summer, there are 37 departures in a week to seven destinations. 60% of the passengers are in transit to Spain and 35% are for leisure. The airport doesn’t have a telescopic air-bridge walkway.
