Tenzing–Hillary Airport, which is popularly known as Lukla Airport, is a very small airport. It is located in the town of Lukla, which is a part of Khumbu in eastern Nepal. Sir Edmund Hillary built this airport in 1965, in order to help the local Sherpas by developing this poverty-stricken area. The airport was renamed in honor of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary, in January 2008.
This airport is popular, because Lukla is the place from where people start the climb to Mount Everest Base Camp. It was rated as the most dangerous airport in the world for over 20 years by a program called Most Extreme Airports, which broadcasted on The History Channel. Lukla Airport is a small airport with very basic amenities. During peak seasons, about 80 to 90 flights operate in a day with three to four flights at a given time. Most of the flights operate during morning hours. The terminals get busy with people and there are no specific announcements.
