Melbourne International Airport is about 25 km away from Central Business District (CBD), Melbourne city. It was listed in the top 5 best airports in the world by the Airports International Council Quality Survey. Initially, Essendon Airport was the main airport and it was replaced by the current airport as the terminals failed to handle increasing passenger traffic. Later, in July 1970, Melbourne Airport was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister, John Gorton. Melbourne International Airport handled about six international airlines and 155,375 passengers in its first year of operations.

The airport has received numerous state and national tourism awards including Eagle Award, Service Partner Award, and Premier Business Partner Award given by the Singapore Airlines in 2002 and 2004. It was also presented The Australian Construction Achievement Award in 2006, for the runway-widening project.

There are four terminals at the Melbourne International Airport including one international terminal, two domestic terminals, and one budget domestic terminal. There are 56 gates in the airport’s terminals including 40 domestic and 16 international gates.

Terminal 1 handles domestic and regional arrivals and departures for Qantas Group airlines.

Terminal 2 was inaugurated in 1970 and has 20 gates with aerobridges. It hosts limited domestic and international flights to and from Melbourne Airport. An expansion proposal was announced in 2007 with an objective to include retail facilities, new lounges, a new satellite terminal, redesigning of customs and security areas, and increased luggage capacity.

Terminal 3 hosts arrivals and departures of Virgin Australia airlines.

Terminal 4, also known as the Domestic Express or South Terminal, is home for budget airlines including Tigerair, Jetstar, and Regional Express Airlines (Rex).

It includes City Express, which departs every 10 minutes and operate 24/7, including public holidays; St. Kilda Express operates 7 days a week from 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM, including public holidays and departs every 30 minutes on weekdays and every 60 minutes during weekends.; Frankston & Peninsula Airport Shuttle operates 7 days a week including public holidays except Christmas Day from 4:20 AM to 7:25 PM and pre-booking is a must to avail this service.
