Munich International Airport is about 29 km away from Munich city. It is the 2nd busiest airport in Germany and the 7th busiest airport in Europe with respect to passenger traffic. This airport is also the busiest airport globally in terms of international traffic.

The airport has a helipad and two parallel runways each measuring 4000 m in length and 60 m in width. It has an orientation of 08R/26L and 26R/08L, while the helipad is about 30 m in length. It is the secondary base for Lufthansa including Lufthansa regional and Star Alliance partners along with Frankfurt.

Terminals Trivia

Munich airport has 2 passenger terminals of which terminal 1 began its operations on 17th May 1992, while terminal 2 started functioning in 2003. Both the terminals are well-equipped with several facilities and can handle around 25 million passengers a year.

Terminal 1 has 5 modules, divided into A, B, C, D, and E. It serves the subsidiary of Lufthansa, German wings and all the non-member flights of Star Alliance. Some of the airlines which use this terminal include Air France, British Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Delta Airlines.

Terminal 2 doesn’t have modules, instead, it has a Central Plaza with necessary amenities. Members of Star Alliance and Lufthansa mainly use this terminal.

As a part of the expansion process, a satellite building is being built as an extension to terminal 2. It is designed to handle an additional of 11 million passengers annually. It includes extra passenger air bridges and gates.

Facilities at the airport include child care rooms, pharmacy, medical support upon request, baggage trolleys, and a wellness and fitness studio. It also has banks, conference center, kids play area, customs office, prayer rooms, coat check, mail, and dry-cleaning services. There are luggage counters on either side of the check-in desks located on level 3, level 4 and in terminal 2.

There are cafes, bistros, and about 60 restaurants in the airport that offer a wide range of international cuisine, Bavarian specialties, home-brewed beer, fast food, and Asian dishes. That’s not all, travelers can buy duty-free souvenirs and fashion accessories from over 150 shops and boutiques.

Transport Facilities

Travelers can alight at the airport and board a bus in front of the terminal to reach the desired destination. The S1 and S8 S-Bahn line departs every 10 minutes from the airport and is one of the easiest means of transport. These A/C buses have plenty of space to hold the luggage and offer free wi-fi and newspapers to the customers. Trains, car rentals and limousine services are also available and tickets are offered by seat.
