Paro International Airport is located at a distance of 6 km from Paro and is operated by the Department of Civil Aviation. The airport offers limited flight services. It’s first runway was 1,200 m in length, which forced the government to impose limits. Only specific aircrafts with 18-20 seats could operate at the airport. It offers 3 registered airline services and the main fleets at the airport are airbuses and Boeing.
In 1990, government of India funded the extension runway project by increasing it to 1,964 m from 1,400 m and it could handle heavy aircrafts. Paro Airport achieved fourth position at the Travel plan with Expert awards for the best landing experience in 2014.
Paro Airport has one asphalt runway and 2 terminals, including 1 passenger terminal and 1 cargo terminal. Check-in desks at the terminal closes 30 minutes before the departure. The new arrival terminal is expected to handle more passenger traffic of up to 4 flights, as the arrival hall is double the size of the current terminal. 3 baggage conveyor belts and about 16 immigration counters can be set up in the new terminal. Semitransparent roofs in the 2 sections of the terminal can help to reduce the usage of electricity. Expansion of the apron increases the airport’s capacity from 5 to 8 aircrafts.
