Vaclav Havel Airport Prague, prague

Prague Airport, also known as Vaclav Havel Airport Prague, is a state-of-the-art international airport. It is located to the northwest of Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. It is situated 7 miles west of the city center and 7 miles southeast of the city Kladno. Among the newer European Union member states, it is the busiest airport with over 13 million passengers in 2016. Formerly known as the Prague-Ruzyne Airport, the airport began its operations in 1937. It was officially renamed, in October 2012, after Vaclav Havel, who served as the President of Czechoslovakia and Czech Republic.

Many of Europe’s reputed air carriers arrive at this airport, thereby adding to the reputation of Prague as a hub for business, culture, and scientific research. One of the most important awards won by the airport include Diploma and Gold Medal in 1937 at the International Art and Technical Exhibition in Paris. This is primarily due to the architecture of the check-in building, known as Terminal 4, designed by Adolf Bens.

Terminals Trivia

Prague Airport hosts two main passenger terminals, two general aviation terminals, and a facility for cargo. Terminal 1, containing concourses A and B, is for flights outside the Schengen countries. Terminal 2, containing concourses C and D, is for flights within the Schengen countries. Terminal 3 is for private and charter flights, and Terminal 4 is exclusively for state visits and VIP flights. There are also two freight terminals named Cargo Terminal 1 and Cargo Terminal 2, operated by Menzies Aviation Czech and Skyport, respectively. The annual passenger traffic is esteemed to be more than 15 million in 2017.

Shop, Eat, and Relax

Prague Airport is a great place to indulge in some retail therapy. The shops in Terminal 1 are located before the security checkpoint and the shops in Terminal 2 are located after the security checkpoint. There are plenty of duty-free shops, kiosks for books and magazines, 24/7 shops, and fashion brands like Burberry, Hugo Boss, and Michael Kors. Over 85 shops are opened from 7 AM to 9 PM at Prague Airport.

The airport also has a wide variety of restaurants and cafes, which can be a bit expensive. There are, however, more affordable outlets like MacDonald’s, Subway, as well as a Billa supermarket in public areas.

There are special services available at the airport. You can visit the Oratory at Terminal 1, which is a marvellous place to relax and meditate. There are also conference rooms and spaces for passengers travelling with children.

Transport Facilities

Prague Airport is well-connected by buses. Buses belonging to the Prague Public Transit Co. named DPP, stop at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. There are also regular buses to Kladno along with intercity buses. You can also travel by AE – Airport Express, a Czech railways public bus service.
