Riyadh Airport

King Khalid International Airport is about 35 kilometers to the north of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Also called the Riyadh Airport, it has five passenger terminals, a mosque, eight aero-bridge each and an elaborate parking lot. The airport has a royal terminal too for the guests of the kingdom, bureaucrats and for use by the royal family. It is believed that the airport has the largest land allocation in the world.

King Khalid International Airport, riyadh

Riyadh King Khalid International Airport (RUH) is located 35 km (22 miles) north of Riyadh, the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The airport was opened in late 1983 and is operated by the Saudi Civil Authority of General Aviation (GACA). It is a hub for the airlines such as Saudia and Flynas.

Riyadh Airport was designed by the US architectural firm, HOK, and constructed by the Arabian Bechtel Company Ltd. Situated at an elevation of 2049 ft., the land area allocated for the airport is the second largest in the world. It has 2 parallel runways, each 13, 980 ft. long, a central control tower, a car-parking lot that can hold 11,600 vehicles, and a mosque.

Terminals Trivia

There are 5 passenger terminals, of which 1, 2, and 5 are currently operative. T1 and T2 are used for international flights, while T5, inaugurated in 2016, is used for domestic flights. T3 and T4 are under renovation and development. Terminal 5, which caters to 12 million passengers per year, is privately operated by Dublin Airport Authority. T1 and T2 are connected by moving walkways, while T5 has shuttles, which run every 10 minutes, linking it with the other terminals.

In addition to these, there is an exclusive Royal Terminal, used for visiting Heads of State, VIP visitors to the kingdom, and the Saudi Royal Family. Additionally, there is a general aviation terminal for private and chartered aircraft.

Several airlines, such as Air France, Air India, British Airways, Air Cairo, Emirates, Flynas, Saudia, Middle East Airlines, Lufthansa, Srilankan Airlines, and Turkish Airlines have flights operating from Riyadh airport.

The airport is equipped with services like banks, ATM machines, dining and shopping outlets, and a mosque. Hotels, car rentals, first-aid clinics, and VIP lounge access are available at the terminals. Lounges are run by Plaza Premium, Wellcom Lounge, and naSmiles Lounge.

Eateries and cafes like Costa Coffee, Cinnabon, Karam Express, Dunkin' Donuts, Burger King, Pizza Sbarro, and Starbucks are located within the terminals.

Transport Facilities

The airport is connected to downtown Riyadh by the metro. T5 is connected directly to the metro and you can take the Yellow Line (L4) to reach different destinations in the city. Other means of transport include airport taxis, rental cars, and free shuttles provided by some of the hotels.

Several car rental companies have their offices in the arrivals area of terminal 1,2, and 3. Hertz Car rental and Car Sales, Al Wefaq Rent a Car, Theeb, Alga, and Almuraishid car rentals are at T1 and T2 while, Budget Saudi, Hanco, and Auto World Rent A Car are at T3.
