Shanghai Pudong International Airport, shanghai

Built on a 10,000-acre site, Shanghai Pudong International Airport is the primary aviation center of China. Initially, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport was the only airport in the city. But due to increasing demands, the need for a more spacious airport was felt. Shanghai Pudong International Airport started operations in late 1999. Today, the airport serves more than 210 destinations, most of which are international places. Developed with state-of-the-art infrastructure, a total of 104 airline providers fly from this airport. Pudong Airport catered to more than 66 million travelers in 2016. This made it the ninth busiest airport in the world and the fifth busiest airport in Asia.

Terminals Trivia

Currently, Shanghai Airport houses two terminals – Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Terminal 1 has been operational since October 1999. Formed like a seagull, with 204 check-in counters and 13 conveyor belts, Terminal 1 has the capacity to handle approximately 20 million travelers. It consists of 28 check-in gates, where 13 of them are double decker gates. Air Asia, China Eastern, Korean Air, and Shanghai Airlines are some of the airline providers in Terminal 1.

Terminal 2, slightly bigger than Terminal 1, began operations in 2008. Although it is predominantly used by Air China and Star Alliance group airlines, some of the other service providers include British Airways, Qatar Airways, Air Canada, and Emirates Airlines. For moving across terminals, frequent buses between 6:00 AM and 12:00 AM and special roadways are available.

Shop, Eat, and Relax

Shanghai Pudong International Airport is well-equipped with various traveler-friendly amenities, including free Wi-Fi access. To satiate your hunger, you have plenty of restaurants serving local cuisine, fast food outlets, along with some bars and coffee shops. Most of the eateries are on the terminals’ third floor. One of the must-try restaurants is the Canglang Ting Restaurant. Also, duty-free stores and shops selling giftware and branded goodies are located on the third floor.

In addition, the airport has separate baby changing rooms, feeding rooms, nursing areas, transit beds offered on hourly basis, medical clinics, and pharmacies. Extra care is provided for people with limited mobility options. Right from wheelchairs and disabled toilets to lifts and TDD phones, the airport has it all.

Transport Facilities

Metro Line 2 at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, which operates from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM and is available after every 8.5 minutes, is a very convenient mode of transport to and from the airport. Travelers can also opt for bus services, which pick them up from either of the two terminals and drop them to several local destinations in the city.
