Named after Princess Juliana of Netherlands, the Princess Juliana International Airport (St. Maarten International Airport) started as a U.S military airstrip in 1942. The airport is in Saint Martin Island of the Caribbean Sea. Spread over an area of 642,415 m2, Saint Maarten Airport is the main airport of Saint Martin, handling about 1.6 million passengers per year. It has a runway of length 2,300 meters and width 45 meters, 3 aprons with the main apron measuring 72,500 meters. Also, there are a ATC tower and a radar station at the airport.

In 2016, the Saint Maarten airport won ‘The Majestic 5 Continents Award for Quality and Excellence’ and ‘Bizz 2016’ award recognizing its business excellence and corporate social responsibility. Other honors include the Routes Americas Airport Award, the Most Stunning Landing, and the European Award for Best Practices in 2011, 2013, and 2014, respectively.

Saint Maarten Airport has a 4-storeyed terminal building occupying 30,500 m2 and is designed to handle a passenger traffic of 2.5 million. The terminal has 46 check-in desks, 12 boarding gates, 4 jet bridges, and 8 CUSS kiosks (self-service check-in systems). There is a separate area of 2000 m2 to operate cargo flights. About 10,000 tons of cargo is handled every year.
