Toronto Pearson International Airport is operated by the Great Toronto Airports Authority. The airport is named after Lester Bowles Pearson, a Canadian Scholar and Nobel Peace Prize winner. It has 5 runways and many taxiways connecting the runways with aprons, passenger terminals, and air cargo areas. The Toronto airport is equipped with cargo facilities, aircraft hangars, and provides emergency services for firefighting and rescue operations.

Being the largest and the busiest airport in Canada, the Toronto Airport handled a passenger traffic of over 44 million in 2016, which made it the 32nd busiest airport and 22nd busiest airport in terms of the total passenger traffic and international passenger traffic respectively. It also became the 15th busiest airport by flights. The airport operates over 75 airlines with around 1100 departures daily.

Terminals Trivia

Toronto Airport currently has 2 active terminals- Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. Terminal 1 is the largest terminal in the airport and has 58 gates, including 2 that can accommodate the Airbus A380. It has an 8-storeyed building for parking with pedestrian walkways, including the ThyssenKrupp Express Walkway, the world’s fastest moving walkway. Terminal 3 has 48 gates and a 5-level parking garage connected to the terminal by walkways. The airport has a third terminal, the Infield terminal that was temporarily reopened to handle refugee flights.

Presently, the terminal is inactive. There is a separate terminal operated by Skyservice FBO, which serves private charter flights and handles VIP landings.

The airport offers a variety of stores for shopping, restaurants for dining, and lounges where you can relax while you wait for your flights. Duty-free shops at terminals 1 and 2 sell premium wines, cosmetics, fashion jewelry, Artisan-crafted products, and more. Several brand outlets including Burberry, MAC Cosmetics, and Gucci are present here. There are other stores from where you can collect souvenirs and gifts. Also, there are several dining options at the airport, including Starbucks, Subway, 7-Eleven, and Wendy’s.

There are many facilities at the airport, from free Wi-Fi to private lounges, for the ease of the passengers. Banking services, concierge services, free baggage trolleys, lost and found counters, luggage storage, medical services, wheel chairs and assistance to passengers with reduced mobility, and porter services are available at the terminals for passengers’ convenience. The Plaza Premium Lounge at the airport is where you can sit back and relax; it is open to all the passengers.

Transport Facilities

The Union Pearson (UP) Express train runs between Toronto Airport and Downtown Toronto and is connected to Terminal 1 of the airport. Greyhound Canada is a bus service that operates within the city. There are taxis, shuttles, and buses available outside the terminals. There are airport taxis and limousines available for transit. Public transport buses and coaches are other options for commutes to and from the airport.
