Kloten Airport, zurich

Zurich Airport is located 13 km north from central Zurich, Switzerland. In 1903, the Zurich airport served the first powered flight by Wright Brothers. The airport is owned and operated by Flughafen Zurich AG. It has 3 runways, namely, 16/34, 14/32, and 10/28, which are of lengths 3700 meters, 3300 meters, and 2500 meters respectively. Two of them are used for takeoffs and one is used for landing. For the first time in 2015, the Zurich Airport served over 26 million passengers. The airport handled an increased passenger traffic of 27 million in 2016.

Zurich Airport has won several awards in different categories. In 2016, it was ranked number 1 in Europe for Air Cargo Excellence. It won a RIBA International Award in 2006 for its N. Grimshaw Airside Center. The airport has also won the Business Traveler Award in 2012 and the Business Travel Tip Award in 2015, among other prizes.

Terminals Trivia

Zurich Airport has 3 terminals, namely, Terminal A, Terminal B, and Terminal E. Terminal A opened in 1971 and is exclusive to flights operating to and from the Schengen Area (most EU states except Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and some more) and domestic flights. Terminal B has 2 gates, namely, B and D. It was reconstructed in 2011 to accommodate Schengen and non-Schengen flights. Finally, Terminal E is a standalone satellite terminal, which operates non-Schengen international flights. It was opened in 2003.
