Buses in Bangkok provide an inexpensive way to travel within the city. The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) operates the bus services of the people of Bangkok and the nearby provinces. There are over 100 routes, with over 3,000 buses. There are regular (cream-red or white-blue), expressway buses, air-conditioned buses (cream-blue) and EURO II buses (yellow-orange). There are also minibuses and privately-run buses.
Tuk-tuks are the most popular way to get around the city. Taxis are also a convenient way to travel but they are not very easy to get and you’ll have to worry about the famous Bangkok traffic. Taxis come in attractive colours like orange, pink and red apart from the traditional green-yellow and red-blue taxis.
There are several car rental agencies in Bangkok, providing both self-driven and chauffeur-driven options. Some of the agencies are arguscarhire, Expert, Hertz, Budget, etc. Bikes and scooters are an excellent way to get around and avoid the traffic. Bangkok Scooter Rental, Big Bike Rental Bangkok and Go Bangkok Tours are some of the bike rental agencies.
Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) is a rapid transit system that serves the Bangkok Metropolitan Region. There’s the Blue Line that operates from Bang Sue to Hua Lamphong via Phra Ram 9. The Purple Line operates between the north western suburb of Bangkok and southern area of Thonburi. There are more lines that are being constructed and will open soon.
In addition to long-distance services, the State Railway of Thailand also operates a few daily commuter trains running through and to the outskirts of Bangkok during the rush hour. The Skytrain (BTS) is an elevated rapid transit system operating in Bangkok. There are two lines – the Silom line that runs from West to South and the Sukhumvit line that runs from North to East.
There are a number of walking tours in Bangkok like the tours of Rattanakosin Island, Ratchadamnoen Road, Marble Temple Area, Chinatown, Old Town Bangkok and more. There are also trolleybuses that look like trams and are a great way to explore parts of the city.
