Bentota is a small town that can be explored on foot and by short rickshaw rides. To access places closer to Bentota like Brief Gardens, Galle, Aluthgama, Kosgoda Hatchery, you can take public buses from the bus stop on Galle Road. But public buses are not very reliable, and their timetables are inaccurate. If you have time on hands and want to explore the place like a local, then surely hop on one of the buses!
Taxis can be called for from your hotel or guesthouse. Most places will have deals with their own set of cab drivers. There is no regulation of prices and for the unintended, negotiating rates can be daunting, especially when faced with no other travel option. Remember these are private taxis, not public. Be sure to ask at the tourist office, or locals, for approximate prices for certain destinations.
There are no car or bicycle renting options in Bentota. Being a small town, it can easily be traversed on foot. You could potentially hire a car in Colombo if you are planning a road trip across the western coast, but it is not a general practice and can get quite expensive.

Bentota has a small station that is served by local trains that connect to the nearby towns of Kalutara and Galle in the north and south respectively.
Trekking in Bentota is a very peaceful experience as you have the sea by your side the whole time. The treks are not very arduous as most parts of the land are flat. Routes and trails are not well developed, so don't wander too far into the forest reserve that adjoins Bentota. There are tourist companies that can help plan your treks and walks in Bentota and also help you with a local guide who knows the parts well.
