Geneva is a culturally-rich city which has many events held throughout the year. One of the oldest events in the city is the Jeûne Genevois during which Plum pies may be served after a fast. This is a religious custom tied to the medieval era. L'Escalade is another festival commemorating historical battles, and the festival is held during December every year, where extensive parades are conducted with people wearing elaborate costumes. Geneva has a host of museums which document its ancient as well as recent history. Some of these are the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, the Microcosm at CERN, the Palace of Nations among others. Geneva also has many cultural events throughout the year such as the opera and classical music shows at the Opera House as well as a music festival in June.
