Geneva has a very well-developed public transport system as part of the TPG or (Transports Publics Genevois) Geneva public transport. Trolley buses are run by this agency throughout the city. The frequency of the buses is also quite high throughout the day. There are also numerous motor buses operating within and outside the city limits by the same agency as well.
There are quite a few private taxi operators within the city, but these usually have to be booked well in advance. Most of the call taxis or spot hire services don’t exist in the city, and app-based services were also barred some time back. Thus hiring taxis have to be done prudently.
Geneva has a host of car rental facilities at major points such as airports, train and bus stations. Both chauffeur and self-drive options are available here. Apart from the big international car hire companies such as Avis, Hertz, Europcar, there are many local companies which give out cars on hire as well. Bicycle and motorbike hires are also available to tourists from a few locations.
There are no metro services in Geneva, but Transports Publics Genevois or TPG runs the Geneva tramway network, which being supplemented by the trolley and motor buses of the same agency provide very good coverage to all parts of the city as well as certain areas outside the city along with the CERN laboratories.
Although intercity trains are available within the city, there are only two stations. One being the central station and the other being at the airport. There are a couple of stations which are just outside the city limits such as the Secheron station for transporting to the UN. However, this network is being developed to connect to more places within and outside the city limits.
There are great trekking opportunities within and just outside of Geneva. One of the famous and well-known treks within the city is the Geneva walking tour, which starts at Lake Geneva and goes through many historical sites and ends in the Bastions Park. This is a great ay to imbibe the culture and heritage of the city and is highly recommended for history buffs and adventure enthusiasts alike.
