The history of the region dating from before 2000 years ago isn't known, as there are very few samples of written text or any other form of records left behind from the era. This area was believed to have been occupied by a Chinese vassal state known as Tan Tan till around 500 AD. However, that state had broken away from under Chinese rule as it had come under the influence of the Srivijaya Kingdom from the 7th to the 12th century onwards. After the fall of the Srivijaya Kingdom in the 13th century, this area was fought for by the Majapahit Kingdom, the Ayutthaya Kingdom as well as the Malacca Sultanate. The Sultanate came on top and colonised this area marking the spread of Islam. However, the Malacca Sultanate was defeated by the Portuguese in 1511 and Terengganu came under the control of the Sultanate of Johor. After many years of infighting and change of hands, the current kingdom was founded by Sultan Zainal Abidin I in 1708, who was the first Sultan of Terengganu. However, it had to become a vassal state of Siam as the British forced the sultanate to submit to them. After its independence from the British in 1957, it came together to be a part of Malaysia in 1963.
