The city of Male has been used by the ruling dynasties as their seat of government since before the 12 century. Owing to its favourable location, it has served as the centre of political power in Maldives all throughout.
In the 16th century, the Portuguese lay the foundations of the modern city when they set up a trading post on the island. There were some additional trading houses that were set up along a ring of defensive bastions during the 17th century. However, until the early 20th century, there weren’t many things to do in Male owing to limited commercial and economic activity being undertaken on the island.
The city experienced its first spurt of growth in the 1930’s when several facilities such as banks, schools and government offices were introduced. Following this, during the 1970’s there was a big push for promoting tourism and developing the economy. It is during this period that Male attractions and the cities functioning as a hub for neighbouring tourist locations led to overcrowding and today practically the whole island is engulfed by the city.
