Shanghai has a very extensive and expanding network of urban bus routes with more than 1000 proper bus lines. Shanghai has energy, electric and hybrid buses including the world's oldest trolleybus system. Shanghai Railway Station, Xujiahui, People's Square, Zhongshan Park Wujiaochang, Dongchang Road and Indoor Stadium are the main bus stations while Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, Xinzhuang and Longyang Road stations provide many routes to surrounding suburbs.
There are more than 50,000 taxis operated by over 100 taxi companies which come in different colours denoting the taxi company, for example, Lanse Lianmeng and Falanhong Taxi Companies are well-known taxi operators and their cabs come in red and blue respectively. It is mandatory that taxis have meters and print out official receipts. There are existing mobile app-based taxi services like Uber.
Cars, scooters and motorbikes can be rented through rental companies such as Avis, Shanghai Limousine, Shang Car Ltd., Forever Bike Rental Scheme, SISU, etc. China Cycle Tours is a Shanghai and Suzhou-based bicycle tourism company which rents bicycles, besides they do guided city, countryside biking tours and customised tours for those keen on travelling off the beaten path.
Shanghai's rapid transit system, the Shanghai Metro, incorporates both subway and light railway lines extending to every core urban district and the neighbouring suburban districts.
The local train facility at Hongqiao Railway Station of the Shanghai Metro is served by Line 2 and Line 10. Presently, Zhangjiang Tram is the only tram line operating in Shanghai which is a rubber-tired tram system manufactured by the French Translohr company, second both in China and Asia.
The old part of the city has a number lot of streets reminiscent of Shanghai’s history and are ideal for walking or biking around. No wonder Shanghai has well-organised walking routes and biking guides.
