German tribes had inhabited this area for many millennia. The first known records of the area around Stuttgart and its mention was in the first century AD during the occupation of the Roman Empire. The Romans had constructed a fort here during that time on the banks of River Neckar. They were pushed back from here in the 4th century AD. The next time this area was mentioned was in the texts of Abbey of St. Gall in the 8th century AD. The modern city was estimated to have been founded around 950 AD according to the various records of the Holy Roman Emperor Otto I The Great. It is said that there were many horse stables with studs around and hence this area was dubbed 'Stuotengarten' or a stud yard, and that is where this area got its modern name from. The ownership of this area moved from the Duchy of Swabia to the County of Württemberg within the Holy Roman Empire. In 1871 this county joined the German Empire created by Otto Von Bismarck. The Free state of Württemberg was created after the First World War during the Weimar Republic. It became a part of Nazi Germany and due to extensive bombing during World War II required diligent reconstruction after its liberation.
